This was remedied a tiny bit by the lantern effect, at least letting me see a foot or two around me. I had less of a problem playing the game hooked up to a television on maximum brightness, but some parts were still hard to see. My main computer screen had an awful glare, making it even harder to get through dark parts. While it is for a thematic effect, it became a major hindrance for me. Sometimes the game screen gets very dark. The platforming in this game often frustrated me since Madotsuki would sometimes clip through the edge of platforms instead of grabbing onto them and pulling herself up like she was supposed to. This is especially frustrating in the final segment of the game where it’s easy to fall off platforms and have to do the whole section again even though it’s supposed to be a suspenseful scene. While this isn’t inherently bad, there are quite a few areas where platforming is pivotal to the game. I smiled so much hearing both of them, even if they weren’t prominently featured in the game.
There are some really cool parts that are easy to miss where you can hear the aztec rave monkey music or the desert picnic music. That was one of my chief concerns before the game was released. Quite a few memorable places also make a comeback, although they make take some navigation to get to. For people playing this game for nostalgia, there’s enough to make it at least worth messing around with for an hour or two. Many of the characters from the original game make an appearance. I did eventually find the forest area, along with the dude in the middle of the woods who got run over. The good: There are plenty of callbacks to the original game. I kept going one by one until I realized there were only a few doors and none of them were the forest area I wanted to go to but hey, this game was always kind of a maze to me so I’d eventually get to it. Alright, maybe things are changed around. I walk into the nexus and go to the first door on my left. I wanted to start the game out just how I did the original- the forest area! You know, with the trees and the moving background and the little swirly purple guys?
I got 100% of everything and the secret ending. I tackled the game in about five hours which felt just about right- if it was any longer without any additional content, it would have been a drag. It has left an impression on me to this day, which is quite a feat considering I’ve played through god knows how many games that I can only remember a few things about.

To say that I was going to play it was as definite as waking up tomorrow morning or perhaps the changing of the seasons- yume nikki is a very important series to me, one that helped make me a lot of friends back in 2010 and explore more games like it. The best way to describe Yume Nikki -Dream Diary- would be another interpretation of the series. It “isn’t quite” a remake per se there was already a Yume Nikki 3D in the past.
After a countdown page it came to light that there was a new game coming out for the franchise. A manga and some keychains like a few years ago? A CD? An anime? With the announcement of an official project in January, anyone’s guess was as good as mine what it would be. If you asked me what game I’d like to play again for the first time, my answer would be Yume Nikki.
